History and Development:
The history of the Yellow Ribbon Dance Troupe came from a group of friends that have been dancing together for many years. Within their travels these young men have encountered many different communities and people that were enticed by their performance and attitude towards life. The people asked if they could do some storytelling and dance for their communities. These friends were given an inspiration with a new purpose which then developed into a humbling experience that was beyond their understanding. A new journey had begun and upon speaking to the Elders and with their blessing these dancers were said to carry on this journey of teaching and creating awareness to people of the various nations.
The Yellow Ribbon Dancers are based out of Edmonton and is a high energy group that promotes serenity, sobriety and spirituality. Listening to the stories of their Elders these dancers put together a strong group that shows support and respect to all they encounter. Through dance and classroom teachings The Yellow Ribbon Dancers speak about the life as a modern day warrior and how the connection is created within to overcome many obstacles. To dance is to tell stories to tell stories is to share about ourselves, our ancestors, to create a realm of spirituality that touches the heart of many, to entertain and generate a connection with the people.
The first performance under The Yellow Ribbon name was done at a rodeo in Kikino Alberta. Rocky was asked to bring a dance group out to this rodeo and perform, when they asked him what the name of their group was he replied by saying, The Yellow Ribbon Dancers. Because his late brother loved the rodeo circuit this performance was done in his honour. These warriors of today have traveled throughout Canada, Europe and some Northern States promoting healthy lifestyles. The Yellow Ribbon Dancers showcase the many different aspects to the ever growing lessons of dance. They danced for the Queen of England, the Governor General of Canada, the Prime Minister of Canada. They have also performed at such venues and events as the Calgary Stampede, Capitol Ex and many corporate organizations, gatherings and conferences.
Incorporating their dance with many musical groups including Laura Vinson, Susan Aglukark, Carl Quinn and others, they have shown their immense quality and creativity. The Yellow Ribbon distinct style along with stories and explanations of each dance as well as the creation of their movement will take you to a time of memory, honour, humour, humility and respect. When a warrior or a scout is sent out to duty he will always return with a story of his journey and once he returns he will share that story through dance.
The Yellow Ribbon Dancers speak to many different groups in a facilitating environment. Through utilization of the medicine wheel and traditional value they teach the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles, positive leadership, creating awareness, and providing healthy alternatives toward straying away from negative social issues. The presenters speak truthfully about the development of the warrior within and how to express the feeling of change as well as self.
